Hydraulic Engineer - Numerical modeller
Van Oord is looking for an enthusiastic candidate to become a part of our consulting branch in DMC at Jakarta, Indonesia. Using commercial software, you will be able to support our operations across a wide range of tenders and projects on dredging, infrastructure and offshore energy.
YOUR IMPACTWe are seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Hydraulic Engineer - Numerical Modeller to join our team. In this role, you will play a key part in developing and maintaining high-quality numerical models that support a wide range of water-related infrastructure and environmental projects.
Responsibilities: As a Numerical Modeller, you will:
Review data and studies from external specialists
Develop, calibrate, and validate numerical models using leading commercial software.
Simulate hydrodynamic processes, wave propagation, sediment transport, bed morphology, and plume dispersion.
Integrate and analyse extensive field and monitoring datasets to inform model inputs and validate results.
Provide technical input to environmental impact assessments, dredging studies, flood risk analyses, and coastal or estuarine engineering designs.
Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to interpret modelling outcomes and support design, mitigation, or planning decisions.
Prepare clear and concise reports, visualizations, and presentations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Manage databases and data pipelines for real-time and hindcast data
Ensure secure storage, documentation, and archiving of data
Degree in Civil, Coastal, Hydraulic or Environmental Engineering, or related field. A Masters in a relevant specialisation is a plus.
3 - 5 years of relevant work experience in the above fields with demonstrable competence in writing and assessing documentation concerning metocean assessments, sediment transport and adjacent areas.
Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, sediment dynamics, and numerical methods.
Practical experience with one or more modelling software programs for hydrodynamics, waves, sediment transport, or water quality (e.g., MIKE by DHI, SWAN, Delft3D, TELEMAC, HEC-RAS).
Ability to process, visualize and interpret complex datasets (e.g., using Python, MATLAB, GIS, Excel).
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in collaborative team settings.
Desirable:
Experience working with marine or coastal monitoring datasets (e.g., ADCP, CTD, turbidity sensors).
Familiarity with scripting and automation of model workflows.
Knowledge of regulatory frameworks or permitting processes for marine and water-related projects.

ABOUT THE TEAMIn the position of Numerical modeller you will be part of one of the Van Oord teams in Indonesia. Currently 28 people are working from the office in Cibubur, just South of Jakarta, as part of the Van Oord Tendering & Estimating Department, located in The Netherlands.
