Associate Editor, IISS-Asia

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a world-leading authority, whose researchers produce independent analysis to advance a wider understanding of global security, geo-economics and geopolitics.

The Institute is seeking to appoint an Associate Editor to contribute to the work of the Editorial Services team. This role reports to the Editorial Services Manager.

The person will operate as a member of the IISS Editorial Services team directed from London, while focusing mainly on publications and other material of the IISS-Asia office. Several research programmes are headquartered in our Asia office and the appointee could work across any of them, although we anticipate that working on publications for the Cyber Power and Future Conflict Programme would be an important focus of the role.

Responsibilities
  • Project manage IISS publications: dossiers, reports, and research papers for print and digital formats;
  • Draft and achieve stakeholder buy-in for publication schedules;
  • Manage schedules from receipt of approved files to publication in conjunction with the Editorial Services Manager;
  • Take a lead role in copy-editing, proofreading, and quality control;
  • Act as key liaison point between authors, Design and Comms teams;
  • Edit marketing materials for IISS publications as necessary;
  • Engage in broader strategic initiatives as may from time to time be requested by the Head of Editorial Services;
  • Participate as necessary in product development and sales and marketing discussions for IISS publications.
Requirements

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven experience in copy-editing and proofreading print and digital content;
  • Demonstrable experience of managing schedules and working to tight deadlines;
  • Demonstrable experience of working on integrated publications with text, maps and infographics;
  • An interest in data visualisation in both print and digital formats;
  • Experience promoting publications through print and digital channels;
  • An interest in the commercial aspects of publishing;
  • An understanding of cyber power and international issues is advantageous;
  • Experience of working as part of a multifunctional, international team;
Remuneration

This position is for a fixed term of two years and may be considered for renewal at the end of the contract. The salary offered will be competitive and will be accompanied by benefits including health insurance, life insurance, and contributory pension arrangements.
