Metallurgist Superintendent
Purpose of the Position:
To oversee three critical functions: long-term metallurgical projects, the on-site metallurgical laboratory, and metallurgical accounting. This is a key leadership role that requires a blend of technical expertise, project management skills, and a meticulous approach to data and reporting. Responsible for defining the future of the process, ensuring the quality of the data, and providing accurate reporting that guides our business decisions.
Scope of Work / Key Responsibilities:
1. Long-Term Metallurgical Projects and Process Improvement:
Lead the identification, evaluation, and execution of long-term projects aimed at improving metallurgical performance, reducing operating costs, and enhancing process efficiency.
Develop detailed project scopes, budgets, and timelines, and manage project teams from conception to completion.
Stay abreast of industry trends and new technologies in mineral processing and identify opportunities for their application.
Collaborate with engineering, operations, and external vendors to design and implement plant modifications or new equipment installations.
Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses to justify capital expenditure on new projects.
2. Metallurgical Laboratory Management:
Provide oversight for the on-site metallurgical laboratory, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality control, and efficiency.
Ensure the lab is properly staffed and equipped to provide timely and accurate analytical data for both operational support and project work.
Implement and maintain robust quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) protocols for all sample preparation and analytical procedures.
Lead the development of new testing methods or procedures to support specific metallurgical challenges or projects.
Manage the laboratory budget and procurement of reagents, equipment, and consumables.
3. Metallurgical Accounting and Reporting:
Be the ultimate owner of the plants metallurgical balance, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and transparency of all metallurgical data.
Oversee the entire metallurgical accounting process, from sampling protocols and data collection to final reporting, in accordance with company standards and industry best practices.
Generate and present comprehensive daily, weekly, and monthly metallurgical performance reports.
Lead the reconciliation process for mass and metal balances, identifying and resolving any discrepancies.
Work closely with finance and commercial teams to provide accurate data for inventory valuation.
4. Team Leadership and Capability Building:
Mentor, and develop high-performing metallurgists, fostering a culture of innovation, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.
Foster a culture of safety, technical excellence, and continuous improvement within the team.
Provide expert guidance and support to the operations team for complex metallurgical challenges.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
Bachelors degree in metallurgical engineering, Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. (Masters degree preferred or considered an asset)
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in metallurgical roles within a large-scale mineral processing operation.
Proven experience in managing a metallurgical laboratory, including QA/QC protocols and analytical techniques.
Strong background in metallurgical accounting and mass balance reconciliation is essential.
Demonstrated experience in leading long-term technical projects from concept to completion.
Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage budgets, schedules, and cross-functional teams.
Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
A strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.
Proficiency with metallurgical simulation software and data analysis tools.
