2D Pixel Artist (Freelance)

Key Responsibilities:
  • Pixel Asset Creation: Design and produce a wide range of game assets, including characters, enemies, environmental tiles, props, and UI elements, all in a clean, readable, and visually appealing pixel art style.

  • Frame-by-Frame Animation: Create smooth, expressive, and engaging animations for characters (walk-cycles, attacks, idle animations) and special visual effects, demonstrating a strong understanding of timing and principles like squash-and-stretch.

  • Technical Collaboration & Optimization: Work within specific technical constraints such as limited color palettes, fixed resolutions, and file-size limitations to ensure optimal performance and fast load times for mobile and PC platforms.

  • Project Management: Manage your time effectively to meet individual project deadlines and deliverables as agreed upon at the start of each task.

What Were Looking For (Qualifications):
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience specifically in creating pixel art for games or interactive media. (Note: Applications with less than 2 years of experience will not be considered).

  • An exceptional online portfolio showcasing your pixel art, including static sprites and animated sprite sheets or GIFs.

  • Deep foundational knowledge of color theory, composition, perspective, and silhouette readability.

  • Proven experience in pixel-perfect character and VFX animation.

  • A meticulous, detail-oriented approach with the resourcefulness to solve artistic problems within technical constraints.

  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Aseprite, Photoshop, or Pyxel Edit. Basic familiarity with the Unity engine is a strong advantage.

  • Excellent communication skills and a professional approach to freelance collaboration.

The Freelance Structure:

This is not a typical 9-to-5 role. Work is assigned on a per-project or per-task basis. Each task will be discussed individually with agreed-upon deadlines, scope, and pricing before commencement.

Application Requirements:

As part of our screening process, shortlisted candidates must be prepared to provide a comprehensive overview of their working methods. Please prepare the following information:

  • Quality Benchmark Confirmation: Candidates must demonstrate their ability to produce work that matches the specific quality and detail level of the pixel art prevalent in the Korean market. You will be expected to confirm your capability to work to the standard exemplified in this reference image: https://kr.pinterest.com/ideas/메이플스토리-캐릭터-픽셀/954824715003/.

  • Detailed Pricing Structure: Applicants must provide a clear and transparent breakdown of their pricing model. This must include, but is not limited to, your standard rate for assets of specific sizes (e.g., 100x100 pixels, 200x200 pixels). We require an understanding of how you determine your pricing—whether it is based solely on image size, or what other factors influence the final quote, such as complexity, animation requirements, and detail level. The possession of a formal, standardized price list is highly preferred. If you do not have a fixed price list, you must be prepared to explain your methodology for determining pricing for new projects.

  • Production Timeline Estimate: Based on the character style and complexity shown in the provided Pinterest reference image, candidates must provide a realistic estimate of the number of days required to create one fully realized character, including multiple animation states such as idle, walk, and attack animations.
