Indonesian Acquisitions Librarian

Duties

The position is in the Library of Congress office, US Embassy Jakarta. Incumbent is supervised by the Head of Acquisitions and reviewed by Field Director. In compliance with applicable guidelines, regulations, and budgets, the incumbent acquires publications from Indonesia in all applicable languages and formats, including digital materials, for the collections of the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., as well as universities and other institutions - primarily in the United States -  that participate in the Library of Congresss Southeast Asia Cooperative Acquisitions (CAPSEA) program. Means of acquisition include purchase from commercial and noncommercial vendors, formal and informal exchange agreements with non-commercial sources, and gifts from government and non-government sources. To help ensure acquisition of publications that fall within the collection guidelines from the Library of Congress, incumbent regularly uses specialized online systems for procurement. Incumbent maintains knowledge and awareness of political, social, cultural, legal, and religious developments across Indonesia.

All selected candidates must be able to obtain and hold a: 

  • Public Trust - Background Investigation security clearance. 

All selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation and may be subject to a pre-employment medical exam.  Selected candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time 4 weeks (1 month) upon receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Experience:

Four years of managing a book acquisitions program in libraries or educational institutions or publishing houses or non­governmental organizations.

Language: 

  • Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate in English is required. 
  • Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate in Bahasa Indonesia is required.

Job Knowledge:

Good knowledge and understanding of the current political, social, religious environment in Indonesia as well as a general knowledge of the history of lndonesia. An understanding of the organization and structure of lndonesian cultural and social institutions including, but not limited to, publishing and book trade, libraries, higher education, government agencies, societies, and non-governmental organizations.

Skills And Abilities:

Ability to work independently, creatively and efficiently with minimal supervision. Good research skills to be able to identify and locate sources of publications. Good oral and writing skills, excellent interpersonal skills. Skills in the use of Microsoft Office and other automated systems that support library acquisitions.
